Former Timberwolves Employee Charged with Stealing Team's "Strategic NBA Information"

In a shocking turn of events, an ex-Minnesota Timberwolves employee, Somak Sarkar, has been released on supervised release after being charged with felony third-degree burglary for allegedly stealing internal files, including valuable "strategic NBA information," from a team executive, Sachin Gupta. The court filing revealed that Sarkar had accessed over 5,000 files and downloaded them onto another device after taking a hard drive containing Gupta's personal financial information and sensitive team data. Despite being fired in February for his actions, Sarkar claimed he had the hard drive to "put some stuff on it" but forgot to return it, leading to his arrest and a subsequent search warrant at his home where incriminating evidence was found.

Sarkar's attorney, Ryan M. Pacyga, hinted that there may be more to the story yet to be revealed, promising additional information to come in due time. Sarkar's career trajectory within the NBA saw him move from analytics roles at the New York Knicks and New Orleans Pelicans before joining the Timberwolves in 2021. However, after a transfer due to poor job performance in August 2023, Sarkar found himself embroiled in a legal battle over the alleged theft of critical team information. With his next court date set for May 16, 2024, NBA fans are left eagerly awaiting further developments in this high-profile case of internal breach and betrayal within a professional basketball organization.
